Three must-see locations in the Bucegi Mountains

This article offers you a medium hiking route in Romania with three distinct tourist spots.

How can I get here?

The three tourist destinations are situated in the Bucegi National Park, which is close to Brasov, one of Romania’s most popular destinations. The Bucegi Plateau is accessible by car via the Transbucegi route, which is a straightforward route with breathtaking scenery. A 20 lei fee is collected at the parking lot to cover area maintenance.

There is another way to get there by cable car from the city of Busteni, and it costs around 100 lei. Prices are constantly changing, so check out the information on the official websites. Don’t forget to check if it works when you go.

Babele (The old Woman)

Although the name is strange, this first spot refers to some stone formations that formed in this area.  The name comes from some mushroom-shaped rock formations, the result of erosion and the varying hardness of the rock layers.

The Sphinx

The Sphinx is a natural rock formation in Bucegi Natural Park, and it is located at an altitude of 2,216 metres. The odd formation is considered one of the “Seven Wonders of Romania.” Over millions of years, the wind and other natural elements carved the nearly 12-meter-tall (40-foot-tall) rock until it resembled a human face. In fact, from a certain angle, its outline resembles the Great Sphinx of Giza, located in Egypt.

Heroes’ Cross on Caraiman Peak

The Commemorative Cross to the Romanian Heroes of the First World War is a monument built between 1926 and 1928 on Caraiman Peak at an altitude of 2,291 m located in Romania, in the Bucegi Mountains of the Southern Charpathians. The cross has a height of 39.3 meters, and on sunny days, it is visible from Busteni Town.

We have been to Bucegi National Park twice. Once to see the Sphinx and Babele (in winter), and the second time to make the route to the Cross. What I would like to say about the winter trip is that it was a big mistake. Although there was no snow, it was extremely cold, and the wind was blowing extremely hard. It was quite a spontaneous trip, so I wasn’t properly dressed. So if you go in the winter, make sure you are dressed appropriately.

On the second trip, I was better prepared and had a pleasant experience.

I would like to mention that I have no experience hiking. This route is easy-to-medium in difficulty. On the way, I saw various people of all ages, including children. The route starts from the parking lot I told you about above or from the other tourist attractions. There are many routes, and they are all marked.

The road is simple, as I mentioned, and if you are fortunate enough to have a sunny day, you will be treated to breathtaking scenery. It took us about 3–4 hours to get there and about the same time to return to the parking lot.

If you plan to visit Romania and discover some unique monuments and beautiful landscapes, these 3 tourist spots must be on your list.

Some tips for a better experience.

Thank you! Tell us about your experience there in the comments section.
